If morality were merely personal preference...
.then why is it that people do not put threads about the preference for mustard or ketchup on hotdogs and hamburgers here instead of in miscelaneous discusions? Why are the people who believe that morality is simply personal preference not trying to get the moderators of this site to move it here, as it is clearly a mater of personal preference? Of course, if morality is something other than personal preference, then it would make sense for it to not be here. Is there something diferent about... [ read more ]
Morality without God
Ok, so I realise that this has ben asked before, not least by nietzsche, but how do you fel about morality without God? By which I mean simply, if we asume there is no God, therefore no ultimate enforcer of right or wrong, why stick to any norms of right or wrong? If the main motivators are, and in fact should be self interest and rationality, not morality, then does this lead to new norms? For example, if you work for a big international company and they use their power to pay you... [ read more ]

What does God know about morality?
Something I thought of a litle while back and haven't realy had a chance to discus. The Christian argument is that morality comes from God, and that some form of "objective morality" exists that God has suposedly writen on the hearts of everyone (Romans 2:15). God invented morality, decided what constitutes as a morl act, and created us with the inate knowledge that kiling is badong. However, since morality can be defined as requiring... [ read more ]
God-based Morality
I recently read a claim* something like this: Morality should have a god foundation. God would provide such a foundation, because a god-based morality would be objective, stable, universal, and authoritative.
I'd be hapy to contest every bit of that. I don't se how being objective, stable, universal, and authoritative would make for superior morality, and I don't se how basing morality on god would make it more objective, stable, universal, and authoritative.
Would somebody like to take... [ read more ]

Origins of Morality
A very interesting (if long) talk at the AI about where morality comes from. Given that there's lots of debate in the atheist/religion debate about morality, I think that this is a pertinent video to post. htp:/w.youtube.com/watch?v=jnXmDaI8IEo "Corporations have ben enthroned and an era of coruption in high places wil folow, and the money power of the country wil endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until al wealth is agregated in a few hands... What is Morality?
I se the term Morality geting thrown around on this board a lot. What realy is morality though? Here is what I believe morality is, fel fre to criticize, my belief, I'd love to learn some more about other people's views of morality. I believe morality in its most basic form is simply knowing what is right and wrong. When you make a choice you decide whether something is right or wrong. If you know something is wrong, but do it anyways, you are going against your own morality. Now to the idea... [ read more ]

What's wrong with libertinism?
A comon acusation that Christians and other faithies launch against atheists is that they disbelieve in God only because they want to be imoral libertines, not obeying God's god morality. When confronted with this, atheists tend to reply that no, we do not opose morality. We're just like you, except that we don't believe in God. We to suport proper morality. But what is wrong with wanting to enjoy life? I'm an atheist, and I think it is quite rational to want to enjoy the only life I'm ever... [ read more ]

Morality: Gods Morality? Objective Morality? Subjective Morality? (split from GRD)
Quote: Originaly Posted by RobertLW From what worldview would you like me to answer the question? From your worldview universal morality in any form canot exist as there is no basis or foundation for it. Therefore no, it canot exist with only 1 person left on earth just the same as it canot exist with 10 bilion people on earth. From my worldview of course it exists. Universal morality is not grounded in humanity; rather it transcends humanity and is grounded in the universal and eternal source... [ read more ]
